Near the turn of the 20th century Stone Town was a bustling port, a trading center, a supply and communication hub and a true International City. Travelers from many lands passed through Zanzibar and like modern tourists many wanted to keep a record of the isles exotic sights. Cameras were large and complex in those days, hard to maintain and transport. But Zanzibar was fortunate to have intelligent citizens and business interests with enough foresight to risk importing a number of these new cameras to the Islands. They were at once put to use to record important events, buildings and local "color" in order to sell photos to an eager public. We are fortunate that many of these early images were also printed as post cards, cards that survive to this day and give us a glimpse of the past.
Stone Town soon grew to support at least five photographic firms. Click on an image or name below to see examples of their work.
